Tamarack, Larix laricina, is a species of larch native to Canada that thrives in boreal forests and wetlands. Indigenous peoples have long used tamarack wood for making snowshoes, and it has also been used for utility poles, fence posts, rough crates, and pulpwood.
In autumn, tamarack trees put on a striking golden-yellow display, making them a beautiful addition to the landscape. Unlike most conifers, tamarack sheds its soft needles in late fall.
Tamarack provides important cover and food for a variety of wildlife, including bear, deer, and moose. Snowshoe hares feed on its twigs and bark, porcupines eat the inner bark, and grouse enjoy the needles and buds.
