Red Oak, Quercus rubra, has dark green leaves with pointed lobes that remain on the tree later into the fall than many other oak species, often turning deep red or russet before dropping. It is a fast-growing, long-lived hardwood that can reach impressive heights and provides excellent shade. Its acorns are a major food source for wildlife, including deer, squirrels, bears, wild turkeys, and many bird species. Red Oak also plays an important ecological role by supporting hundreds of species of insects, which in turn feed birds and other animals, making it a keystone species in many North American forests.
