Northern Spy Apple - Sold as individual stems
Northern Spy Apple (Malus domestica ‘Northern Spy’), is a very cold-hardy apple variety developed in New York in the early 1800s. The fruit is large, crisp, and mildly sweet with a hint of tartness, making it especially well suited for baking, pies, cider, and fresh eating.
Northern Spy apple trees grow best in hardiness zones 3–7 and require six to eight hours of full sun daily. They prefer moderately rich, well-drained soil. When planting, amend the soil with manure, compost, shredded leaves, or other organic matter to a depth of 8–12 inches for best establishment and long-term health.
Northern Spy apple trees require cross-pollination from another apple variety. Because Northern Spy blooms late in the season, it must be paired with late-blooming cultivars such as McIntosh, Cortland, Empire, or GoldRush to ensure successful pollination. Adequate cross-pollination is essential for good fruit production.
