Hard Sugar Maple, Acer saccharum, is Canada’s national tree, renowned for its sap, which is used to make maple syrup, and its versatile, durable wood prized for furniture and flooring. This majestic deciduous tree can reach heights of 30–35 m and thrives in moist to well-drained sandy or clay upland soils. It tolerates shade when young and is ideal for planting in small blocks, with recommended spacing of approximately 10 ft × 5 ft.
Sugar Maple is also celebrated for its spectacular fall foliage, displaying vibrant shades of orange, yellow, and red. It provides seeds and dense canopy cover that support a wide variety of wildlife, playing a vital role in forest ecosystems.
