Canadian Plum (Prunus nigra), also known as Wild Plum, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America. It typically grows 6–10 m (20–33 ft) tall and often forms thickets by sending up shoots from its base, so periodic thinning may be needed in small spaces.
In mid‑spring, it produces fragrant white flowers that attract pollinators. By late summer to early autumn, Canadian Plum yields small, edible fruits that are ideal for jams, jellies, and pies, though the leaves, stems, and pits are toxic if consumed. Planting multiple trees improves fruit production, and Canadian Plum can also serve as a pollinator for other plum varieties.
It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well‑drained soils, making it an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, pastures, and naturalized areas.
