Butternut, Juglans cinerea, is a medium-sized deciduous tree that can reach up to 30 metres in height. It belongs to the walnut family and produces edible nuts in the fall. The bark of young trees is smooth and gray, becoming ridged and furrowed as the tree ages.
Butternut typically grows alone or in small groups within deciduous forests. It prefers sunny areas along forest edges and requires moist, well-drained soils, often thriving along creeks. It does not tolerate shade well.
Naturally occurring trees are protected by the Endangered Species Act, 2007.
