Zone 36 / Age 1+0 / Size 20cm+
Black Elderberry, Sambucus nigra, is a deciduous shrub that typically grows 1–3 m tall. It prefers wet to moist low ground sites and tolerates some shade, though it performs best in full sunlight. Black Elderberry produces clusters of fragrant flowers followed by small berries; unripe berries are considered toxic if eaten. This shrub is a valuable choice for shoreline planting, providing habitat and food for wildlife once the berries are ripe.
