Black Cherry, Prunus serotina, is a medium to large deciduous tree that can grow 15–30 m (50–100 ft) tall. It has smooth, grey-brown bark when young, developing distinctive dark, scaly plates with age. The tree produces clusters of small, white, fragrant flowers in late spring, followed by small, dark purple to black cherries in late summer.
Black Cherry prefers full sun and well-drained soils and is commonly found along forest edges, open woodlands, and roadsides. Its fruit is an important food source for birds and small mammals, while the tree itself provides habitat for wildlife. Although the cherries are edible, the seeds contain cyanogenic compounds and should not be eaten.
